Stress Management Tips for National Stress Awareness Month this April

Every April since 1992 has marked Stress Awareness Month for us to become better in tune with our inner stress causes and the cures for them. As per a study by Stress UK, since the COVID-19 pandemic, 65% of people in the UK have felt more stressed since the restrictions launched in March 2020 and 53% of people felt more anxious than usual. This is a scary statistic, but not shocking as we know how difficult this time has been. What we need to now focus on is the cures for stress and how we can better manage it and recognise when it is increasing in ourselves.

Top tips for managing stress:

  • Get an adequate amount of sleep. It sounds too good to be true but good sleep = more productivity and better health and general wellbeing.
  • Nutrition is key. It’s ok to ‘treat’ yourself but generally try to stick to a healthy and balance diet. For tips on nutrition, check out the NHS Eat Well programme:

  • Keep hydrated. Lacking in water can lead to burnout, huge health issues, headaches and increased anxiety levels. Stay healthy, stay hydrated!
  • Exercise. Even if you would rather snooze and binge watch your favourite Netflix show, and let’s face it, we would all love to, get outside and walk. Run. Do yoga. Lift weights. Swim. Whatever it is you enjoy, do it. You will notice your stress levels reduce significantly.
  • Get a significantly healthy work and life balance. You need to have time to relax and unwind around your work schedule or you will burn out.
  • Talk about your stress with loved ones. Talking about it can help relieve the weight. If the stress is too much to handle, consider visiting your GP or booking some therapy in.
